Our Story

Our mission and programs are directly inspired by Nicholas Sparks’s personal experience as a world-traveling author, a father of five children, a school founder, and a longtime resident of rural North Carolina. A passionate advocate for education, Nicholas has devoted his Foundation to transforming lives through globally-focused college-preparatory learning.
The Foundation’s flagship scholarship program provides access to a globally-focused college-preparatory K-12 education for youth in New Bern, North Carolina, at the Epiphany School of Global Studies. We welcomed our first cohort of scholarship students in August 2015 and will welcome a second group in August 2016.
We hope you will take the time to read more about our work.

A Focus on Kids

We know that education is a huge indicator for college readiness and economic success in life. Yet, for children in underserved rural communities, the available educational opportunities often fail to prepare them to fulfill their potential in college and in a globalized workforce.

As we thought more about this question, we could not help but turn an eye to the rural community in which we are located. We see daily the urgent need in American rural communities, where poverty rates are the highest and most persistent, especially in the South. 85% of persistently poor counties are in rural settings, and the vast majority of these are in the South. In North Carolina, it is hard to escape the reality of poverty. Young people here face challenges to social mobility that are among the worst in the nation.

We provide a unique approach to address these problems. Our one-of-a-kind scholarship program provides comprehensive support, including one-on-one tutoring, evening activities, and summer camps, as well as first-rate educational experiences such as travel for research and service learning.
