All of us at the Nicholas Sparks Foundation are delighted to announce the winners of our 2014 Student Travel Photography Competition.

Five months ago, we asked students from around the country to send us photographs from their travels that addressed the theme of “courage.” With no other guidance, students had to think about what courage meant to them and how they could find it while exploring the world. A flood of wonderful submissions poured in, each one different in its perspective and its approach to the theme.

We asked Nicholas Sparks himself to judge the winning photographs and select five photos to win prizes. Nicholas had a difficult choice, but he eventually settled on one grand prize winner and four honorable mentions. The grand prize photographer will win $500, and we will award $250 prizes to the photographers of each of the honorable mention photographs.

Each of the five photographs we will highlight tells its own story. Together, they are a profoundly moving tribute to human strength, compassion, and resilience.

We will present one photograph each day this week, with the grand prize photograph to be revealed on Friday. We hope you will take the time to check back each day to celebrate the impressive work of five wonderful young photographers.
